Volunteer Position Opening: Assistant Managing Editor

Speculative Nonfiction is an online literary journal founded in 2018 by writers Robin Hemley and Leila Philip. Any definition of nonfiction will include some variation of the idea that, foremost, literary nonfiction considers what is ‘informative’ and ‘factual.’ But for the essayists in our magazine, facts as such matter for the ways they open paths to speculation. We define a speculative essay as one that concerns itself with the figurative over the literal, ambiguity over knowing, meditation over reportage. At Speculative Nonfiction we aim to set aside that tired dog of truth vs. fiction and consider afresh the literary territories nonfiction is charting in the 21st century.

Our all-volunteer editorial team is dedicated to fostering dialogue about this exciting corner of literary activity, and we approach our work with a spirit of collaboration and experimentation. We are looking for an Assistant Managing Editor to join our team. We envision the Assistant Managing Editor will be responsible for the following:

  • Website: Publish new issues; manage issue archive; serve as general webmaster and update Squarespace site as needed.

  • Social Media: Manage the journal’s Twitter and Facebook accounts; grow our audience and engagement levels on these platforms.

  • Publicity: Publicize the call for submissions; announce new issues; share individual essays/excerpts; follow up with organizations that discuss or link to Speculative Nonfiction; generate event pages and posters.

  • Reading: Review and provide feedback on journal submissions in conjunction with the Managing Editor and Founding Editors.

  • Editing: Provide editorial support to journal contributors in conjunction with the Managing Editor and Founding Editors; proofread final drafts and copy that will appear across all platforms.

To be considered for the Assistant Managing Editor position, send a CV or résumé to speculativenonfiction@gmail.com (subject line: AME Position) by July 31, 2020. Please note this is a volunteer position.
